iconCerebral Palsy Disease

Cerebral palsy disease is not a disease at all. Cerebral palsy is actually just a term used to refer or describe the chronic conditions of the muscles in the body that would affect the movements of the body. Cerebral palsy is the result of an injury or damage done to the brain. The word “cerebral” means brain while the word “palsy” means a disorder of the body movement and body posture of the person. This medical condition is due to brain lesions located in the different parts of the brain hence the brain cannot function properly. The brain lesions may be the result of an injury to the head, injury done during the birthing process or even during the prenatal days or while the baby is still inside the mother’s womb. The brain lesions may be located in the different parts of the brain hence there would be different symptoms that can be seen on the person affected. It is important to note that only the motor functions are affected with this kind of disorder, it does not affect the way that a person would think or does not affect the mental faculties of the person affected.

Cerebral Palsy Disease

Contrary to what most people are thinking, cerebral palsy disease cannot be termed as a disease because it is just a disorder that has resulted from a brain injury. It is a non-progressive condition, meaning it does not get better or worse over time. This disorder is non-communicable or contagious unlike diseases that might get spread to the other people.

Cerebral palsy in infants should be diagnosed as early as possible so that treatment could start as soon as possible. When you hear the term treatment for cerebral palsy in children, this does not mean that the disorder would go away or be cured, it only means that through medications, occupational therapy and physical therapy the child affected with this chronic medical condition will be trained to regain control over the body’s motor function. There are treatments that would help the child walk properly with a sense of balance, eat or feed properly, use of the toilet and other simple chores. This would give the child some form of independence although the cerebral palsy child will have to live with this kind of disorder for the rest of their lives.

Children who are affected would normally have some speech problems as well because most of the time, the facial muscles would also be affected. Speech therapy would be a good thing for a cerebral palsy child so that the child will be able to speak better despite the limitations brought about by this disorder.

If you are a parent who has a child affected with this disorder, you might find it helpful to know that there are some financial aids provided for by the government since treatment and raising a child with cerebral palsy could mean a lot of financial burdens. You might also want to look around for private organizations and non-government organizations that would provide medical and financial assistance as well.
