Cerebral Palsy In
Infants
Pregnancy
is a very joyful occasion for parents. This occasion is filled
with pure joy and expectation, the only thing that would sadden
up this occasion is when the parents would lean that their
child has cerebral palsy. Cerebral palsy in
infants is now alarmingly at a high rate according to
some studies. At the moment, the exact cause of cerebral palsy
is not yet indicated however there might be a few reasons that
might have damage the infant’s brain thus leading to this
medical condition. Said reasons are there was no proper care of
the infant while still in the mother womb and a medical
malpractice occurred during the delivery of the baby or the
birthing process.
Cerebral
Palsy In Infants
Cerebral palsy in infants
cannot be detected during the time of delivery it might take a
few months for the symptoms to be noticeable. Even when the
symptoms are already seen doctors might still not make the
exact diagnosis since there are still a lot of variables and
factors that have to be considered like the ability of an
infant’s brain to recover or heal itself from any damage. This
ability of the brain is unique to infants within the first few
months after birth unlike the adult person’s
brain.
Some of the
symptoms that you need to watch out for in infants are abnormal
crying, signs of lethargy, trembling of the arms and legs,
difficulty in feeding abilities like sucking and swallowing
milk, baby favoring one side of the body when sleeping or even
when awake and experiencing seizures often. In short, babies
affected with cerebral palsy would have delayed or slow
development compared to babies who are normal. Unlike other
medical conditions which can be clearly diagnosed,
cerebral palsy in infants has to be well
monitored by a group of medical experts before any diagnosis
could be made. The development phase of infants has to be
watched and monitored closely for proper
diagnosis.

As
disheartening as this medical condition is, there are times
that an infant diagnosed with cerebral palsy could still be
able to lead a normal life since the infant’s nervous system
could still function normally over time. Proper medical
treatment like medications and undergoing physical therapy
would be a lot of help in the infant’s life in the
future.
A family
with a child affected with cerebral palsy would be undergoing a
lot of physical and mental stress not to mention the financial
burdens the family would be facing. Most government would
provide support in terms of financial and medical aid to the
family. There are also a lot of non- government or private
institutions that parents can seek help from to ensure that the
patient would get the proper medical care. Parents of children
with cerebral palsy would also be benefiting from support
groups to help manage the pain, frustration and stress they are
facing. This is not an easy matter both for the family and the
child affected but parents should not lose hope and should
always have a positive outlook for the sake of their
child.
